I Wrote A Song During Isolation

Hello friends!

Obviously the title of this post is super self-explanatory so I’ll just jump right into it I guess?

Australia moved into Stage 2 lockdown this week, with my state, Victoria, being one of the first to implement the strict rules, and it’s highly likely we’ll be moving into Stage 3 pretty soon. Personally, the stability of my casual job has been up in the air since the situation escalated, and even now, we’re not sure how long our store will legally be allowed to stay open under these new rules.

I’ve been getting used to spending a lot more time at home, with my entire family. It’s not entirely new for me, however I usually have the house all to myself, and in a week, I probably see several of my friends more than two or three times, something I now don’t get the luxury of doing. It’s fair to say that like everyone, this lockdown has changed the daily routines of my entire family.

That said, more time at home is not necessarily a bad thing. I’ve had a lot more time to do the things I really want to do, as has been the case for a lot of people. Which for me, means more time to spend working on this blog, and writing music.

I think I’ve come up with more, musically, in the last two weeks, than I have in the last six months.

On the 23rd I came back from buying my friend a guitar so she had something to work on during this isolation period, and while mucking around on my own guitar, I came up with a short verse and pre-chorus of a song. It had super heavy ‘isolation’ connotations, and I thought it was pretty funny, so I quickly did a recording of it and threw it up on my Instagram story.

See below.

// mind my facial expressions thanks //

But yeah, I just put that up on my Instagram story, didn’t really think about it, and left to get my flu shot with my mum. When I got a moment to check my phone, I had messages from a bunch of my friends and even a few people I didn’t know very well, responding to the song.

What started out as a huge joke ended up with people messaging me outside of Instagram, sending it to their friends who in turn messaged me, and essentially a lot more people than anticipated ended up seeing my story and hearing the little fun song I had put up.

It was one late night conversation that made me consider actually finishing the song, so the next day when I came back from work, I sat down and tried to finish it. Fair to say, this little ongoing joke, ended up taking a lot longer than I thought it would, but I finally finished it. So this morning when I sat down to write a post, I thought it was a good opportunity to share the song with you!!

Hope you like it, let me know what you think :)))

For The Love Of Mac Ayres

I was introduced to Mac Ayres by a close friend of mine who I work and play music with. My quality of life has vastly improved since.

It was a general Wednesday shift and I was coming in with my lunch for my break, and it was like my ears physically widened and I had to pause. Mac Ayres, is not a sound you can readily or voluntarily ignore, and if you find that you can, I’m questioning everything about you.

//source//

I can’t remember which song it was that I heard first, all I know, was that it was smooth, and for the rest of the day while it was playing through the speakers at work, the world was at peace. At least within the store walls. It’s hell out there.

Mac’s voice, is on that same kind of Daniel Caesar wave, which by now you know I appreciate. I at least hope you know by now. It’s so indescribably rich, and it’s the audible sound of butter and honey. Smooth.

Mac released his album, Something To Feel this year, and it’s just one big package of goodness. Like I mentioned at the start of this, this album in particular is played fairly commonly at work, and I’ve fallen in love. So much so that most of my colleagues know that whenever I’m rostered on, that’s all we’re listening to for the day.

My favourite song from the album is Get To You Again, purely because of how unexpectedly hard Mac goes in on it. It seems cruise-y, it’s seems chill. He shows off some of his pipes in the first chorus, you get some tasty runs. But then two and a half minutes in and he starts really singing and you feel this song in the bottom of your feet. I have to watch how much I get into this song in public cos it shows on my face.

//source//

This Bag is another great tune from the album, as is Stay which features Jack Dine and Chris Anderson. Both of them are really chill tunes that manage to showcase his incredible vocal ability at the same time.

If smooth tunes, easy listening yet shiver-inducing vocals are what you’re after – Mac’s the way to go. He features on heaps of my personal playlists on Spotify, which is linked below for you to check out, and his music is so picturesque and perfect to listen to on really relaxing drives, either on your own or by yourself. At the same time, I love turning it up while I’m going about my business at home, just to have as a soundtrack to my day. It’s very often that I just head to his general artist page on Spotify and press play, because there’s nothing on there that doesn’t please me.

I’m currently just patiently waiting for Mac to announce a tour through Australia, because best believe I’m snagging myself some tickets to that concert.

Paige’s Space // An Interview

Hello hello.

This is a very exciting post for me, considering I’ve been absolutely obsessed with this artist for the most part of 2018.

Before you continue reading this post, make sure you’re all caught up, so if you haven’t already, stop what you’re doing and make sure you check out the first post I did about Paige, which you can find HERE.

Paige just recently released a new song, Alignmentsand while it still hasn’t beaten her song So Far for me, it’s still an absolutely beautiful song, and I’ve had it on replay since it was put out.

If you’re up for some incredibly warm acoustic guitar, the chill-inducing harmonies that I’ve come to expect from Paige and lyrics that make you wow-out-loud, then listen to Alignments. You will not be disappointed.

Anyhow.

On top of being a beautiful musician and singer, Paige is also a gem of a human being, and generously agreed to answer some questions for you all! So if we could all send some universal ‘thank-you’s’ Paige’s way, that would be sweet.

Enjoy.

How early on in your life did you decide that music was going to be the avenue you wanted to pursue as a full time career and were there any other options you had in terms of interests that could have possibly lead you down a different route?

Very early on [to be honest]. When I was 5 I first performed in front of my school and that’s when I knew I loved it and didn’t have to think twice. Although I also was hugely fascinated in space and astrophysics which is something I’d love to do but sadly I suck at maths loooolll.

Were there any artists who influenced you in a major way as a young child?

My first influences were always Disney Channel stars. Miley Cyrus was a huge one for me because Hannah Montana inspired me a lot to become a musician. The Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato e.t.c. Lady Gaga has always been a huge inspiration for me throughout my life and how she is so bold and fearless as an artist.

What’s the idea behind your Instagram name, @paigesspace?

I guess I kind of just wanted to have something that associated with space because I love space so much haha.

What was you initial reaction when you saw Billie Eilish sharing your Instagram page and fan-girling over your voice and your covers, as well as your original songs?

Hahaha it was definitely overwhelming. I was in a state of shock for a good week. Just really hard to believe.

What has that type of support meant not only for you as an artist, but as someone who has a huge musical presence on your social media?

It’s meant the entire world. I will never fully be able to express my gratitude for all of it.

You’re a huge believer in manifestation, you’ve credited a lot of your success to the fact that you’ve put your dreams out into the universe for them to manifest, what are your personal beliefs around manifestation and the powers of the universe, and how does that impact the music you create?

Wow what a good question! I genuinely believe that you attract the things that come into your life…. It’s not just a matter of sitting in your room and just asking the universe for your dreams to come true and getting them, but with hard work and manifestation I do believe that’s how your dreams come to life. My beliefs inspire me to write songs such as “Alignments” which is based off of the idea of not blaming the universe for ALL the things that go wrong.

Billie has shown her continual support, singing your recent single ‘Alignments’ as her favourite song at the moment. Do you feel a certain pressure when someone like Billie is promoting your music, to live up to the hype she’s built for you?

I think it’d only be natural to feel pressure but I feel more so driven to work harder to be a better artist for all the people watching me. It’s definitely a nerve wracking feeling but it’s only going to help me grow as an artist

What advice would you give to young musicians, singers and songwriters, in regards to sharing your music online, specifically posting covers and original music on Instagram like you do?

Just to sing what you love, post consistently, post up some songs people are also familiar with, but also remember to do it because you love it and it makes you happy.. That way you won’t be as scared.

How do you generally begin constructing a song, and what are some of the topics you particularly find yourself writing about?

I find chords and then sing melodies to them, then begin singing about how I feel. Usually I find myself singing about a girl or love because love is what drives me the most.

Who would be five artists that you’d love to collaborate with in the future?

Sooooo many. If I had to only pick five I’d pick Alessia Cara, Billie Eilish [of course], Rex Orange County, Ruel and last but certainly not least Kehlani.

You’re located in New Zealand. Do you see yourself staying in NZ and basing your musical career from there or can you see yourself moving away to pursue it elsewhere, such as Los Angeles?

I definitely 100% don’t see myself staying here. I want to branch out somewhere bigger with more inspiration although I LOVE my country I’d love to go some place new. LA would be amazing.

Of the songs you’ve recorded, which is a favourite or a standout, released or unreleased?

Probably a song I wrote called “Waves” which I’ve spent almost a year on producing with a producer called Noema Te Hau III. Probably because it’s been the hardest I’ve ever worked on a song. Hopefully it will be out soon enough!

Screen Shot 2018-09-17 at 6.46.15 pm
//source//

Do you have any plans to release a full album, is that something you’re working on?

I’m just in the middle of recording an EP which includes 5 songs. Very excited to let it out!

What inspires you?

Experiences, Pain, People, Nature and Love.

If you could pick any decade of music to listen to on repeat, which decade would it be and why?

EARLY 2000’s!!!! It’s what I listen to the most because it reminds me of when I was younger and what I was listening to while I was experiencing things for the first time. I also love the artists from early 2000’s.

You Should Hear is all about sharing incredible music recommendations and artists, what one song, and what one artist would you recommend everyone listen to at the moment?

Definitely listen to ‘Better’by Tommie. She’s soooooOOooOOoooOoo good!!

And that’s it for the questions! Anyone who read my first post about Paige, would understand how much I’m all about Paige and her music, and in turn, how exciting it is to be able to share this with you all! So a massive thank you to Paige for being so kind and answering these for me and for you all!!

Also, currently listening to Better by Tommie, and Paige is.not.wrong.

Tentendo Is THE Mood

Hello friends, and welcome back to another slightly aggressive music recommendation from me to you.

Today’s post is all about a Melbourne musician who I really only discovered earlier this year through the rabbit hole that is Melbourne-based musicians and the ever growing beautiful collaborations that continue to come out of some of my favourites. The music scene here in Melbourne is one of my favourites, and I don’t think any city can beat it.

That said, Tentendo may be one of my favourites to come out of it.

Originally a bass and guitar player, he moved to production after an injury that put his playing on pause and that’s where the magic happened, although he still continues to play bass with Billy Davis but that man and his music is a whole other story.

I listened to his song Dance With Me a song which features an incredible Melbourne rapper, Jordan Dennis, after hearing about it through Jordan’s Instagram and I featured it on my post all about Australian artists.

Screen Shot 2018-09-17 at 11.21.38 am
//source//

The song has everything I want in a song, a fat bass line, a really funky drum kit that requires you to groove to it and a catchy as hell hook. The production of the song and Jordan’s energy on the vocals made it one of my favourite songs of the year so far.

My favourite song from Tentendo’s collection is Ghost, featuring Melbourne RnB singer, Blasko. If there is anything you do with the information within this post, make sure it’s listening to Ghost. I listened to this song and promptly had to pick my jaw up from the floor.

I don’t know if it was how unexpected that build up to the hook is and how subtle the ‘drop’ is, but whatever it was, Tentendo spun some magic to make it happen that smoothly. It’s a sound you simultaneously want hug and get down to.

Screen Shot 2018-09-17 at 11.43.38 am

His first official feature on his Spotify page, One Stop Shop, gives me mad late 90’s RnB vibes, and I’m 100% here for it, as I usually am. It’s sung by another Australian singer, JANEVA, who gives me chills.

His most recent track, Waves, is noticeably a bit more chilled out. It’s very ethereal and features Blasko, Jordan Dennis and Rahel.  Each vocalist contributes something beautiful to each verse they take and it combines to make a really pretty track with heaps of lovely layers that just compliment each other and the funky kit that’s still present.

Screen Shot 2018-09-17 at 11.28.44 am
//source//

To be quite frank, for me personally, Tentendo is four for four with all the tracks on his Spotify. While Ghost and Dance With Me are clear favourites, One Stop Shop and Waves are just as catchy and tasty to listen to, so I recommend you give his Spotify a good run through.

Melbourne is so bloody rich in musicians and Tentendo, in all his production magic and perfectly executed collaborations, embodies that perfectly. Make sure you check out his Spotify, his Instagram and his SoundCloud, and keep an eye out for Tentendo. I know I will.

@paigesspace

Hello friends!

For today’s post I’m gonna be sharing an artist who I believe you all need in your life. I haven’t done an artist spotlight in a hot minute, and as much as I’ve been enjoying sharing some different posts with you, I’m super keen to share this artist.

If you’re not familiar with @paigesspace on Instagram, you’re about to be.

Screen Shot 2018-07-09 at 12.00.04 pm

//@paigesspace//

I discovered her through one of my favourite singers/people, through whom all is good in the world, Billie Eilish, who came across the New Zealand singer’s account and promptly became obsessed with Paige, which subsequently turned to her spamming her Instagram account story with videos of Paige’s numerous covers and original songs she has posted on her Instagram account, which is linked above.

As soon as I saw the first video, or more so, heard her voice, I jumped right over onto Paige’s account, and began my investigations. I was not disappointed.

Tell me this doesn’t give you chills.

We all know how much I love Done For Me by Kehlani and Charlie Puth, but I didn’t think I could ever love a cover version, an incredibly original cover version, this much. It’s perfect.

So since Billie Eilish bestowed her gift upon the world and my Instagram account, I’ve been eagerly awaiting new covers and videos from Paige, whether that be on her Instagram, or her YouTube channel, which is equally as generous.

Which made the news of her single release, So Far, all the more exciting, considering all the newly gained, and greatly deserved fans she has welcomed to the family following Billie’s promotion.

So Far came out a couple days ago, and let me tell you. If you’re a fan of Billie Eilish, Kehlani, any good music, you have to listen to it.

I’ve been listening to it on repeat this entire morning, especially while I write this, and it’s yet to get old.

Screen Shot 2018-07-09 at 12.00.50 pm

//@paigesspace//

Paige’s voice is probably one of the smoothest voice I’ve ever heard on social media. We all know how much I love to Alice Kristiansen (@alicelk) and I’m 100% that Paige is on the same level, I definitely put those two on the same shelf.

So Far reminds me a lot of two of Kehlani’s acoustic releases, Honey and Again, both of which are beautiful songs. Speaking of, there’s also this cover up on her Instagram to really drive my point home…

Paige’s voice is so smooth and mellow, but you can hear how clear and strong it is at the same time. I won’t talk about the guitar because you should just feel my love for it it in your own heart the second you hear that tone. The harmonies at the end nearly made me fling my laptop across the room when I heard them, this girl has me falling in love with no-one to fall in love with.

Definitely check Paige out. She truly tugs on the heart strings, and I don’t have a heart to tug on, so you know she’s doing something right.

Paige’s YouTube
Paige’s Twitter

I’d love to know what you guys think of Paige, I’ll probably continue to obsess over her voice and her music until she releases and another album or something.

alicelk

Hey friends!

I actually haven’t sat down and blogged, yuck I low-key hate saying that but I love it at the same time, in a hot minute, just because of how far ahead my scheduling ‘game has been. Again, ew, excuse that, I’m never saying that again.

So I thought while I have a day or two off uni (more like I have one class and I refuse to travel an hour either way into the city for a single one hour class that I definitely nearly fall asleep in anyway) I’d write up some posts for you guys. I also have an essay that I could very well start writing too, but priorities. Am I right?

Side-note; I’m also three coffees into my day, so you’ll be receiving the full affect of that in this post.

Tonight’s post is gonna be dedicated to sharing the literal ray of sunshine that is Alice Kristiansen. If you don’t know who Alice Kristiansen is, please pay attention. That was slightly aggressive but I’m passionate about this chic and the music she’s putting out into the world so I don’t regret it and I won’t be taking it back.

I first discovered her on YouTube. Kind of the unexpected avenue for Alice, considering how much her Instagram has been popping off lately, I mean, Shawn Mendes is surely trying to hit her up or something because it seems as if he’s liking her pictures and videos mere seconds after she uploads them.

Screen Shot 2018-05-17 at 5.31.51 pm

Besides the point.

I discovered her through YouTube, thanks to, once again, Daniel Caesar. I swear, that man leads to all things good. I was listening to an acoustic guitar cover of his song Blessed and lo and behold, there on the side bar is a video of Alice covering the same song. I don’t know what made me feel inclined to check it out because as much as I attribute some of my greatest finds to YouTube recommendations, I don’t click on them all that often, but for some reason I did. Thank god.

I can’t accurately describe the honey that is embedded within her voice, specifically in that video, so to avoid embarrassing myself, the only rational thing to do is to share the video below. You’re welcome. Enjoy.

Let’s talk.

  • The vibes. The vibes are unreal and I can’t fathom how beyond incredible this video feels, let alone sounds.
  • Not only that, but how effortless is it? This song is not an easy song to sing. Trust me. I won’t attempt to prove to you how hard it is to sing, but it’s not easy and she just…does it. Like that. Kinda rude, but bless her.
  • Not sure how, but you can literally feel the emotion in her voice. It’s probably down to how little is going on in the video, but it’s still so much more emotional that 90% of YouTube covers I’ve ever watched. The amount of chill, combined with the filter, combined with her voice which is out of this world, get me emotional as heck.
  • Also, can we talk about how annoyingly symmetrical her face is? People who look this good shouldn’t be this talented, please take one and move along. Cheers.

But yeah. That video kinda had me obsessed with Alice Kristiansen for weeks on end, until I followed her on Instagram and discovered the treasure trove of short covers, aesthetic as heck pictures and videos of a gal I just wanna be, to be quite frank with you.

Screen Shot 2018-05-17 at 5.33.51 pm

Did I mention Shawn Mendes earlier? Yeah? Well I don’t know but if something’s going on there, I’m calling it now, because after several people brought it to her attention that the dude was liking all her Instagram vids (I’m also sure that no-one needs it brought to their attention when Shawn Mendes likes their video but there were a lot of comments so Idontknow, don’t hold me accountable for my words please), only a few short days later, she posts this on YouTube.

Tell me you can’t watch this video, without turning into a literal sunflower. You can’t, and if you can, you’re lying.

The Lord is good, and if you search Alice Kristiansen on Spotify, you’re blessed with her artist page, which features not only more covers, but originals as well. Currently, my absolute favourite song is In The DarkIn The Dark and let me tell you, it’s a vibe. Not what I expected from Alice at all, especially because what I knew prior to that discovery was all that I had seen on her Instagram and YouTube, but I am loving it. The acoustic versions that are there also show the insane versatility of her voice. Have a listen.

Let me know if you listen to anything that I’ve linked or done any of your own searching for Alice, because it’s definitely worth your time. I’d love to know what you think!

Byron Files // Molly Millington

Hello everyone! Today is the first of a few posts I’m super duper keen to share with you all, my Byron Files. There aren’t many of these posts, but the ones I do have are incredible, and I can’t wait to tell you about some of the amazing artists I discovered at Byron Bay BluesFest this year.

Starting with, Molly Millington.

Molly Millington was the first act I saw on Day 2 of the festival, and it’s fair to say that she was a great start to what would be a long day.

We walked past her tent as we wondered around the grounds, and the sound of her incredible voice instantly dragged us in.

Her voice was so refreshing to listen to, and her guitar playing style as she sat on her chair was incredibly nonchalant and easy-going it was hard to dislike her. The only type I felt even slightly annoyed was when she announced she was 17, and I had a flashback to seeing Billie Eilish and feeling absolutely astounded at how young, but insanely talented they both are. Both Kate, my best friend who was at the festival with us, and I couldn’t believe this girl was younger than us, but still looked so confident and care-free up on stage, not to mention how talented she was.

Screen Shot 2018-04-14 at 6.45.32 pm.png

/source//source/

We missed the start of her set, but still managed to catch some of her songs, including Lonely Together, Ain’t A Love Song, Cool Like You, Rude Boy and her final song from her recent EP, Daddy’s Got A Gun.

(All of those songs are linked to Spotify, because trust me, you’ll want to give them all a listen.)

She switched skilfully between two mic’s, infusing a ton of reverb and echo on some parts of song, which added this ambient atmosphere that absolutely filled up the tent, and her guitar was backed up by a steady bass at her feet. Not only was it an absolutely incredible set to listen to, but it was so interesting to watch Molly hold herself and all that she was in control of on stage.

My favourites were definitely Lonely Together, Rude Boy (“this is a song about rude boys, hopefully you don’t meet any”) and Daddy’s Got A Gun which features on my yearly 365 playlist for 2018.

Screen Shot 2018-04-14 at 6.45.05 pm

/source/

She has a definite country twang to her music, but even if that’s not your thing, which we know it always isn’t mine, you can’t help but like her music, or at least that’s me personally. I’ve found myself literally screaming the chorus of Rude Boy a couple of times since returning from Byron Bay much to my family’s dismay and Daddy’s Got A Gun is such a powerhouse of a song.

A lot of it definitely comes down to how fantastic Molly is as a songwriter. While I love her voice heaps, her lyrics are incredible; straight to the point, yet in the most poetic way possible. She doesn’t mince her words but it’s like she’s reading straight from a storybook at the same time. Her storytelling quality is out of this word, and I found myself hanging onto every single word she said and sang, much like everyone else in the tent with me. Literally any young teenage girl, at any stage of their youth, can find a song of Molly’s that just…gets you. Like I have claim of Rude Boy.

Screen Shot 2018-04-14 at 6.45.16 pm

Definitely check out Molly’s website. Her EP, Daddy’s Got A Gun, was released last month in March, and you can find a couple more songs on her website, and her Spotify, aside from the one’s a mentioned in this post.

I hope you enjoyed this post! I definitely enjoyed sharing a bit about Molly, and how much I was obsessed with her set!

Screen Shot 2018-01-23 at 12.55.29 pm.png

Hello friends! Today I’m here with another Courtesy Of, this time, brought to you by a young YouTuber from Denmark, living in Singapore, Amalie Star.

Screen Shot 2018-01-23 at 12.54.49 pm.png

Amalie was kind enough to share her top ten favourite songs at the moment, so here they are!

Lyin Star – Jhene Aiko: Since hearing this song, it’s been stuck in my head. I’ve never listened to a lot of Jhene, but this is such a sick song, I’ve definitely added it to some of my playlists.

Where Did I Go – Jorja Smith: We all know how obsessed with Jorja Smith I am, so we understand how pumped I was to see this in Amalie’s list. This is one of her best songs in my personal opinion. The drum beat is the funkiest part, but nothing beats Jorja’s voice.

All The Time 2 – Wintertime: I’d never heard this song until Amalie sent me her list, and all I get is Gucci Gang vibes times ten. They definitely sound nothing alike beat wise, but the rapping, in my head, follows the same flow.

Two Shots – Goody Grace, gnash: Instant The Neighbourhood and G-Eazy vibes. I’ve only listened to a few songs from gnash, but this is probably gonna be one of my favourites from him.

Anymore – Ella Mai: Ella Mai is one of the most underrated female singers ever, so again, insanely excited to see her on Amalie’s list. If you’re looking for beautiful RnB singer with crazy vocals, then Ella Mai is all you need. Unpopular opinion, definitely prefer Ella to Jhene.

Run Me Dry – Bryson Tiller: I never jumped on the Bryson Tiller train, but I definitely understand why so many did. Of all the songs that I’ve heard from Tiller, this may just be my favourite. A huge thank you to Amalie to introducing this song to my life. It’s a bop.

So Sick – Ne-Yo: We all know this song. It’s still to this day, one of my all time favourite shower songs. Amalie’s only 15, and while that’s not ridiculously young, this song came out in 2006. She would have been like…4. It just shows how amazing this song is. It’s one of my all time favourite RnB songs to exist.

Because Of You – Ne-Yo: Another slap from Ne-Yo. I still remember caching this song on my old iPhone 3GS back when you couldn’t listen to music without wasting all the internet data your phone had. I honestly try to sing every part of this song, lead and back-up.

Bad Religion – Frank Ocean: Aside from Lost, this is my favourite Frank Ocean. channel ORANGE was the best Frank Ocean album released, never got around the most recent one, but this is one of the best songs on the record. 100% round of applause to Amalie for including it on her list.

No Scrubs – William Singe: One of Australia’s finest exports, William Singe. This cover is incredible, and I definitely understand Amalie including this one. Will has the perfect voice for old RnB songs, the stuff released in the late 90’s, early 2000’s, and this sums that up perfectly. And the falsetto. Honestly.

A huge thank you to Amalie for sharing her favourite songs. I definitely found a couple new favourites from her list, hopefully you enjoyed some of the songs she shared too!

For one of the finest Instagram grids I have ever seen, you can follow Amalie’s Instagram, linked of course, and if you’d like to check out her YouTube, you can subscribe to her channel for amazing fashion, lifestyle and makeup videos!

Let me know what you thought of Amalie’s favourite songs in the comments below, and I’d love to hear some of your own recommendations too!

P.S – let me know what you think of a theme change? I’ve been playing with the idea for a little while now, and would love any feedback you have about my current theme! Is it easy to navigate? What are the set backs? Does it look pretty????
