The Vinyl Records // Round Two

Hi friends!

Hope you’re all well and thriving. Today’s post is gonna be Round Two of my Vinyl Series!

The record I wanna share today is one of the first ones I actually bought for myself as soon as I got my record player, I mean after I got sick of my Jim Reeves op shop vinyl, and that is Rainbow Valley by old mate, Matt Corby.

This is honestly one of my all time favourite records I own, purely because of how incredibly beautiful this album sounds translated on vinyl.

As I did with Round One of the The Vinyl Records, which you can read HERE, I’m just gonna share a few of my favourite tracks from the record, instead of going on a bit of a ramble about every single track!

No Ordinary Life This song is sublime. The piano, the strings in the background, the layered harmonies, it all comes together so seamlessly, this song is genuinely such a trip to listen to. Add in the drums and how they just drive the song along with such a steady chug, and it’s so easy to get lost in this song. I find it ten times more beautiful when listening to it on vinyl. This album in my mind, was made to be listened to on vinyl. Hands down. This song is probably one of the best indicators of that.

All That I Say This song is such a groovy track. The vocals in this are a great mix of flowing and ebbing drawls and short, snappy backing vocals, and it all works together so nicely. The bass in this track is also probably my favourite part, it definitely carries the song for me.

Get With The Times I have to refrain from including literally every song on the album in this list, but I had to throw this one in there. This one is my favourite in terms of Matt Corby’s vocal performance. It’s another song that features a really tasteful electric guitar groove, nestled in amongst the piano and backing vocals, and the lead vocals are so sweet and beautiful.

All Fired Up Beautiful song. Beautiful arrangement, beautiful singing, I can’t say much else for this track.

Miracle Love  I always wait to reach this song when I’m making my way through the record. So much emotion packed into one song and I think for me, this is Corby’s best vocal performance on the entire track. So impactful and raw, and it truly shows off just how talented he is as a singer and musician.

That brings us to the end of our second Vinyl Records! Hopefully you enjoyed this post, I sure loved getting the opportunity to lay down in bed and listen to the vinyl on repeat while I wrote up this post.

Matt Corby // Live

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.

Hello friends. Boy do I have a blog post for you. Albeit, incredibly, incredibly overdue, but exciting nonetheless.

On the 12th of April, I finally got to see Matt Corby live. If you’ve been here for a little while, you know that I could go on, and on and on about Matt Corby and the insane amount of talent in that one person.

Due to the absolute shambles that was Melbourne public transport during the weeks before and around the day of the concert, my friend James and I met on the train, which took us a few stations forward, before boarding a replacement bus for about 40 minutes into the city.

Once we were there, we scouted a place for dinner, settling on The Duke, a popular restaurant, rooftop wine bar and pub opposite Federation Square, and spent the forty-five minutes before the concert talking and preparing for the man himself.

Following dinner, we made our way to Margaret Court Arena, only a fifteen minute walk from The Duke, and with a quick pit stop at the arena bar, were down in the mosh pit a few minutes later.

Matt’s set was electrifying, though at the same time it was one of the most serene performances I’ve ever seen. Whether that’s down to the nature of his songs and how authentically raw they all come across, or the overall presence he has while on stage, I don’t know, all I do know is that I spent majority of the concert just standing there staring at him in total awe, with James periodically checking in with my to see if I was okay.

I wasn’t.

He played some of the fan favourites quite early, like one of his recent releases No Ordinary Life, All Fired Up, Sooth Lady Wine and Brother, and I was pleasantly shocked and surprised when he played Monday one of my absolute favourite songs from Corby.

One thing that struck was, despite how packed the mosh pit was, it wasn’t a rough, pushy crowd of people. Everyone was content with listening to his voice, the amazing band and backing vocals he had behind him, and catching a glimpse of him every now and then when you opened your eyes.

He moved around the stage pretty unassumingly. He was the epitome of humility, and I think that only really served to draw us all in even more.

Empires Attraction, Resolution and Souls A’Fire were the perfect songs to ‘wrap up’ the show, and it really kept the energy levels on a steady incline throughout the entire set.

The final encore song was a tune everyone had been holding out for, one of his most popular songs from his latest album, Miracle Love.

The song was so atmospheric and Matt controlled the audience like a conductor in an orchestra pit. There was a moment where he instructed all of us on what to sing, a percussive yet hauntingly beautiful line, ‘bring back that miracle love‘ and he ad-libbed over us.

There’s something incredibly guttural yet at the same time gentle and hypnotic about his voice. He has this great ability to switch between being really tender and soft but then completely ramp up to sing with all his power behind it. It’s one of my favourite things about Matt, and the songs he writes partner with his voice perfectly.

It was a really great concert. I have to be unbiased and admit that Matt isn’t entirely in my top five artists, or maybe even my top ten, but I knew passing up the opportunity to see him live was probably one I’d grow to regret, and I’m so glad I go to see him.

If you ever get the chance to see him live, I highly recommend you do so. It’s an amazing mixture of complete humility partnered with an insane amount of talent that makes it a show worth watching.

Matt Corby Spare Me Please

Hello friends. Hope you are all doing well and good, hope this week is treating you nicely, cool let’s talk about Matt Corby.

Matt Corby, is one of Australia’s finest exports, and not only is he a beautiful, beautiful creature to look at, but… boy has pipes. He first showed his face during one of our prehistoric Australian Idol seasons, when he was fresh out the womb stunting a side fringe and a vest over his white t-shirt, and then promptly disappeared from the public eye for a couple of years.

He then reappeared with a full grown beard, a guitar, slightly blue-er, dreamy-er eyes and an arsenal of incredible, mind-numbing-ly amazing songs that give you shivers no matter what order you listen to them in.

I’ve definitely done a cover of his song Resolution and to date, it’s one of the most popular songs I’ve ever posted, and I definitely believe a lot of that is down to how incredible the song is.

You may also know his song Brother which is the pinnacle of all contemporary choreographer’s dancing repertoire, purely for the shivers you are guaranteed.

I’ve 100% included some of Matt’s songs throughout my blog, you may recognise his name popping up from time to time, because his songs are scattered generously throughout a lot of my playlists.

However, I was not aware of this song, Song For Interlude, probably because it isn’t on Spotify, and it’s live from his tour. Well, my friend who plays the drums for me, you may recall I mentioned him in my post all about my gig experience, is obsessed with the man. Not only has he shared with me many times that his brain would probably shut down if he met Matt in person, but he’s also sent me quite a few songs and videos that I’ve never seen or heard before.

Specifically the one I’m about to show you.

I have to apologise to my mate, considering I only watched the video a whole day after he told me to, and I have to apologise to myself, for willingly missing out on this magic.

That song, basically sums up the entirety of Matt Corby and what he means to the Australian public. Matt Corby is a national treasure and I dare anyone to tell me different.

That is all.
