2021: The Year Of Yebba

2021 has not been kind to us. There’s been all sorts of mayhem going on around the world however for me personally, there’s been a shining light at the end of the tunnel, in the form of the queen herself aka Abbey Smith aka Yebba.

After a couple years in relative, intentional obscurity, making herself available for only a pocket full of people willing to search, Yebba has so far graced us with not one, not two, not three, not even four but five incredible singles in the lead up to her album drop this month on the 10th. Literally this week.

I’d easily put Yebba up there with some of my favourite artists of all time. Top Ten easily. Without a doubt. She’s insane.

October Sky, Louis Bag, Boomerang and finally a Spotify version of My Mind were gifted to us this year and each one is incredibly beautiful in its own way.

I’ve already once touched on how beautiful and moving her song My Mind is and how her guttural and raw performance on Sofar’s YouTube channel regularly brings me to tears so I won’t repeat myself and waste your time. I mean it’s currently got over 18 million views so I’ll let you make your mind up for yourself HERE.

October Sky was the first single she released in the lead up to her first album, Dawn and it’s such a beautiful, quintessentially ‘Yebba’ song. Cathartic songwriting, insane runs and vocal control and this God-given talent of making you feel all sorts of emotions. I think it’s a combination of her tone, her writing style and the emotion she manages to convey through her recordings that really just hit you in the gut. She doesn’t have to be screaming or soaring on super high notes for you to feel what she wants you to feel.

October Sky has this beautiful guitar that lies in the background of the entire song, and it compliments her voice so well, especially in the first half of the song. I always find this song randomly popping into my head at the most random of times.

She also released a cover of The Past and Pending by The Shins which is just another notch on her belt, so haunting in this super simple and rustic way.

Here’s the thing. I wouldn’t say that Louie Bag is my favourite, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s not??? Does that make sense? I mean, you’ve got Yebba, that’s a given. But Smino?? Slowly becoming one of my favourite musicians too. It’s hauntingly rhythmic and her voice just floats amongst it all. Then Smino’s bridge comes in and it drives the message home super hard.

The chorus on this track is super catchy. Again, really rhythmic and percussive, though there’s only really a muted drum kit, some light strings and synth and a few added effects to fill in the space, however it just works. This song slaps. That’s all. Highly recommend. 10/10.

Boomerang is her latest release, coming towards the end of August. It’s gritty and raw and introduces this side of Yebba that I’m so excited to see more. There’s this super groovy bass line in there that just chugs along like a steady train and keeps the song really moving and her voice just dance all over this track. She doesn’t really try and show off too much in terms of vocals and trills and runs but she still manages to leave you in awe. I think it’s her delivery. There’s just so much intention and emotion in every line she sings. It’s so effortless.

Honourable mention just HAS to go to a track by Lucky Daye, How Much Can A Heart Take which our girl features on.

The way this song has me by the neck. Choke hold. Captive. I could play this song on repeat all day, everyday. I forced myself to learn new, super hard big-girl guitar chords specifically so I could play this song and sing along because at this point I’ve got this song running through my veins keeping me going. Lucky Daye has been one of my favourite artists this year. His album Table For Two is ridiculously good, popping with incredible features and beautifully written songs that get stuck in your head for hours. Obviously, for clear enough reasons, this song is my favourite on the entire track.

Ever since it was released, ever since they performed it live on Jimmy Kimmel, it’s run my entire life. But we’re here to talk about Yebba. About Abbey. Unless it’s somehow escaped you so far, girl can sing. This song is insane and credits to Lucky Daye but honest to God it’s her verse and chorus that completely make this song. At least for me. Here’s hoping I don’t go AWOL again and I make it back in time to give y’all a full review of Yebba’s album Dawn when it releases on the 10th of September! Let’s see.

Welcome to this month’s Local Radar, where you’ll get your monthly dose of the incredible music coming out of Australia and New Zealand. Hopefully you enjoy these tunes and these artists as much as I have!

TEEKS – Waves

TEEKS, without a doubt, has been one of my favourite voices to ever come out of New Zealand, and there have been a lot of them. Waves comes from I, the first instalment of his upcoming debut album, The depth of this man’s voice is untouched, and he’s able to hold so much power and strength, while showing an incredible amount of restraint and control, and this song is an immaculate example of that. Without much more than an acoustic guitar, some strings, a beautifully delicate horns section and some light percussion, TEEKS’ voice is front and centre, and there’s not much more you can ask from the singer.

MAWiE – Last Night

MAWiE, a South-Sudanese born, Brisbane-based musician counts artists like Michael Jackson, Usher and Chris Brown as some of influences, and you can get a taste of these artists, perfectly mixed in with the singers own style and finesse. Last Night is the second in a string of singles released this year, and it combines a strong confidence with a sense of delicateness that works perfectly for this pocket of RnB and hip hop he is sitting in. From the sounds of things, MAWiE’s shaping up to deliver some incredible music, that’s well worth keeping an eye out for.

Essie Holt – Wanna Stay Up With You

Your indie-pop heart is about to flutter with this single from Australian singer, Essie Holt. A strong guitar riff contrasts with super cute and playful pop synths and Essie sprinkles her delicate and ethereal vocals over the track. It’s such a sweet and simple track, which is what makes it so enjoyable to listen to. It’s like the audible sound of a ray of sunshine and we are here for it!

RIIKI – Share Your Love

Pumped for this track, simply pumped. RIIKI is a 20-year old newcomer from New Zealand and if this track is anything to go by, she’s got a lot more coming our way. The hook on this track is so catchy and effortless, and fans of Kali Uchis, BENEE or Charli XCX should definitely keep an eye on this one. The singer’s vocals are super controlled and tender, all the while matching the energy of the production that really ties the track together. A strong bass line, atmospheric synths and a groove pocket deep enough to swim in make this one of my favourite tracks right now. RIIKI’s created the perfect tune to have a dance and single along to, all the while effortlessly cementing her as one to watch.

Balu Brigada – photographic memory

Well this is a cute one isn’t it? It’s sure to get you grooving and you’ll be smiling every time you catch another sweet lyric in the mix. Synths, soaring backing vocals and a ridiculously catchy hook make this an absolute tune, and is sure to get you super excited about these boys from New Zealand. It’s a song that immediately gets your head nodding and your toes tapping. Fans of ROLE MODEL and Gus Dapperton will really get around Balu Brigada, and I can’t wait to see what else they give us in the future.

The Local Radar

Hello and welcome to a new series I’m committing to; The Local Radar, where I plan on doing my part to share the incredible talent coming out of Australia and New Zealand.

Each month I’ll be sharing five artists who you definitely need to check out, and to kick it off I’ve got some incredible tracks and musicians.

Mia Wray – Work For Me

Mia Wray is a Melbourne singer, who released her single, Work For Me earlier this year. Fans of vocalists like Florence Welch and Bishop Briggs will adore Mia’s voice and how strong and present it is. She dances over this track so seamlessly, letting layers and layers of harmonies provide the framework for this track. The song is incredibly dynamic and over the course of just a little more than three minutes you go from this simmering siren call vocal set-up to an anthem building on a killer horns section and electric guitar. The vocals keep soaring, and it’s a hook sure to get stuck in your head.

Liyah Knight – Mine

The next track is called Mine, and it’s the first single from Sydney-born artist, Liyah Knight. This track alone is enough to get you keen to hear whatever Liyah decides to deliver next. It’s a bite-sized track, but there’s plenty of soul injected into it, giving you Mahalia or SZA energy in a beautifully unique way. Liyah’s voice is front and centre, only enhanced by a simple guitar riff and some synths, even at the songs climax. Not one to miss, for sure.

BLESSED – Something To Believe In

Earlier this month, Western-Sydney rapper, singer and producer BLESSED released his single, Something To Believe In. It’s hard to put the track into a box, genre-wise, as it pulls together these indie-rock sounds into a pop/rap space to create a uniquely intimate and honest track that hits you in the gut with it’s production and humble vocal performance. It’s a song that breaks down genre barriers and definitions and BLESSED just pulls it off so effortlessly.

PLGRMS – Limbs

I first spoke about PLGRMS back in 2018 when they opened for Dean Lewis. They’ve popped back on the radar since then, with a bit of a comeback single in their track, Limbs, which came out in early September. Limbs is a cinematic and dynamic, ever-growing track that completely envelopes you in the best way possible. Synths, intricate pockets and soaring vocals really combine magically on this track, it’s one of those ‘driving through a tunnel’ kinda songs, if you know what I mean.

MiCCY – Tug of War

If funk, soul and everything in between is what you’re after, MiCCY, a 21-year old from Queensland, has truly got you covered with this absolute tune of a single, Tug of War. If a neck-breaking bass line and disco-synths aren’t enough to keep and capture you, her vocals most definitely will, with MiCCY literally swimming over this track. The track is the perfect combination of influences that pull from funk, soul, RnB with some throwback 80s sounds in the mix. It’s everything you could ever ask and if it’s any indicator of what MiCCY’s got in store, it’s well worth waiting for.

Nick Lopez // One To Keep An Eye On

Hello everyone! Today’s post is going to be dedicated to a singer/songwriter who genuinely excites me, Nick Lopez.

I’d initially heard of Nick through Justin Escalona’s Daily Docs, which is how I also came to discover Christian French, so when I was given the opportunity to chat to Nick about his latest single, Posters, a song that’s been over a year in the making, I couldn’t pass it up.

Posters is a song that perfectly slips into that cruise-y, atmospheric pop sound, as does a lot of other songs Nick as released. The story behind the song, which features LA singer Dominique, is equally as beautiful. “It’s about missing someone important to you, and “making friends” with things that remind you of them”, according to Nick.

The song is the product of a completely new and fresh collaboration for Nick. “Me and Dominique were introduced at an event and we set up a writing session
with one of my favourite producers Midi Jones. The first time we ever worked
together we made this song!”

“It was a duet from the get go. I knew it felt right.”

Nick is no stranger to the music scene though. Having written for artists like Lady Gaga, ASTN, Annie LeBlanc and You Should Hear favourite, Christian French, it’s always a little different releasing music for himself. “Releasing my own music is great because I am in complete control and people are fully aware that it’s me who wrote the song, but I also love writing with up and comers like Chris and many others because they are so talented and bring their own unique abilities and vision into the session.”

However, his experience means he’s already a professional at pulling together these contagious songs that stick in your head, garnering himself fans all over the world.

His 2016 single Pink Champagne found huge success in China, and finally getting to go over there was an experience in itself for the LA artist. “Most insane experience of my life. Every teenager in the country knows that song. You walk around the mall and hear it playing, in restaurants, bars, on the radio, everyone knows it. They freak out when they realise it’s me haha. I can’t wait to go back.”

Posters is a step away from the upbeat pop track however, and Nick describes the sound perfectly. “It’s a lot more mature in my opinion, it’s also the first “moody” song I’ve ever
made, it’s slower, more emotional, less mainstream pop.” The maturity of the song really makes the lyrics stand out with this song, and it’s something Nick is excited for fans to hear.

Another Jon Bellion Post

Hello friends! Hope you’re all doing well, it’s your resident President of the the Jon Bellion fan club here, coming at you today with a brand new song, from the gift that keeps on giving, the man himself.

As if an album, a magnificent album too, Glory Sound Prep, wasn’t enough, Jon had to drop some ridiculously reasonably priced merchandise – I’m talking $70 total for a hoodie and t-shirt – with shipping to Australia included – he also then had to announce a tour. A tour I’ve been waiting for, for close to five years. And because that wasn’t enough, without any promotion or warning he dropped a surprise documentary about the make of GSP, and now? Now he’s gone and released another track.

It’s obviously been a wild couple of months for me, as you can tell.

Let’s just get into the song.

Crop Circles.

It’s honestly so good, and I’m not just saying that because I’m unprofessionally biased. Jon shared a few videos on Instagram and Twitter of him setting the song up, finding loops and percussion pockets, which by now, we know he’s somewhat a god at.

It follows the story of a relationship that just seems  to crumble, and the different stages of it coming to an end. There’s some wicked sampling and production in this song, but are we really surprised?

It’s another collab with his producers Mark and Volta who’ve contributed heavily to the creation of this sound that Jon’s seemed to have nailed down. I feel like this song has the potential to reach All Time Low success. I mean, I hope so.

The chorus is such a contrast to the verses, which have so much energy and punch to them. That’s not to say the chorus is any less impressive than the rest of the song. It’s a nice stretch of Jon’s beautiful vocals and I love the rhythm within it, especially towards the end of the song where it keeps vamping and vamping.

I’ve been so impressed and inspired by all the developments and growth that’s taken place with Jon and his music since the release of The Human Condition in 2016. Instead of remaining comfortable with the success he’s achieved and how well that record did, it’s like he used everything he gained from that to push the envelope even further.

I’m so excited for the tour man. Can’t wait.

Need You, A Statement By Feather Touch

Hello friends!

Sometimes I’m ever so fortunate to get an interview with an incredible artist or band. I’ve done a few really interesting interviews, and recently I was given the opportunity to chat with Lachie David aka Feather Touch, about his recent single Need You.

Need You’s been out for a little over a month, how do you feel about having it out, now that everyone’s hearing it, how’s the response been?

Yeah, it’s been just over a month so it’s pretty new, but it’s been awesome. I’ve been really excited about how many people have been interested in it. Most importantly though it’s always most exciting to get friends and family to hear it and to finally be able to play it after telling them about it and playing them snippets for so long. It’s been really exciting to finally be able to show them the finished product. I’ve been really, really ecstatic with just how far it’s gone and all the different places that it’s turned up.

Where have you found it?

Overseas blogs, it’s been played on a whole bunch of radio stations across the country, which is just awesome and people who’ve supported me before like Joy FM in Melbourne, they’ve gotten back on board with my stuff which is always great.

The River, which you released last year did pretty well. They’re pretty different songs I guess, between The River and Need You. You’ve put your vocals on this recent track compared to when you had a feature singer on The River, what led you to make that decision?

Well, I wanted to be more confident. Aeora, who I had on The River has an amazing voice and it’s easy not to be over confident when you’re sitting next to someone with such an good voice, but I think the intent for Feather Touch has always been to be able to do songs off my own bat as well as well as featuring people so I figured it was really time to step out and own that. With Need You it’s the most I’ve ever really tried to embody being that leading pop singer on a dance song, so it was the one that felt right to me to kind put it out and showcase what I can do. Yeah, I think I’m really happy with it! It’s always a nervous moment when you put it out to the world.

Was it something that made you nervous, being the first time?

Yeah I think I was more nervous after The River because I used to sing and play in bands a lot back in the day, but I’d never sung over an electronic production, so you just have to be able to pitch your voice differently and you can’t rely on other things to cover up for it as much. So I think I was a bit more nervous after The River and this one I just really tried to own it and approach it with a bit of confidence. I definitely do a lot more with my voice in Need You than I do in The River.

I also wanna talk about the genre, ‘tropicalpyso’ disco? I’m so intrigued by it because I’ve never heard of it before but it kind sums up the sound so perfectly, but I don’t know what it is, so please tell me about it!

So effectively I didn’t kinda describe my sound for a long time and my cousin had his 21st birthday and he decided to have a ‘tropicalpyso disco’ theme, and I finally had a word to describe the way my music sounds so that’s where it comes from. So yeah, I really try and make sure I have a really summer feel to my music, it’s important to me that you can move to it. Even before, a lot of my older music, there’s always been a real tropical feel and theme to all of it, I think it’s just a beautiful couple of genres of music and you can’t go wrong.

Along that vein, you mentioned that you were pretty surprised by how much of a pop song this release turned into, were you initially feeling a different vibe or direction or did you just let it pan out the way it did during the production process

I think I always kinda get surprised by any song that I write that ends up being really really poppy, just because it doesn’t always come naturally, but I’m in no way disappointed that it happened. I’m always someone who doesn’t really think about what I want to make when I’m making a song, I just start doing things and see what happens. So that’s why I think I’m always surprised when it comes out like a pop song, because with that approach, you’re kind just putting things together, pop is so structured, there so many elements that you kinda have to think about it ahead of time and sometimes when you’re just pulling things together as you go it doesn’t always come through, but it was by no means disappointing, I mean I love pop music, so that was really cool. I think I’m just someone who feels when I’m writing a song I’m as much trying to do justice to the song that I can hear, I don’t really feel I’m trying to pull it to a genre, I don’t really know where it’s coming from.

I feel like, especially Need You, since that is the song of the moment, you’ve got great songs to perform live, not just from an audience point of view but from your point of view also, have you got any live performances lined up any time soon to get that going?

Yeah absolutely, I’m currently hosting a live space in my studio so towards the end of the year I’m gonna do another show through that, and that’s basically intimate gigs that are also live-streamed gigs. Because it’s been so busy, I haven’t had much time to line up as many shows as I’d have liked, but definitely planning to take this on the road, I have a few more songs up my sleeve so keen to get them out. I definitely plan to take it to as much of Australia as possible.

I was doing some digging, and you shared a song on tripleJ Unearthed a few years ago called Jisas, it’s got a really cool Rudimental, Duke Dumont type of vibe to it. How much personally, do you reckon your style and sound have chance from Jisas to Need You?

A lot haha. I think the thing that ties it all together is that genre, which you can still feel present there. And I think when I pulled together Jisas there was also another song, Anything Goes that also got picked up on tripleJ Unearthed, and I really love where those songs headed but I was still surprised again that they came from a sample based state so I’ve kinda had that avalanche of pulling a story together from different samples and it’s not something I’d expected to write, but I love that it happened. With Feather Touch I’ve always wanted to get it to a place where I was doing the lyrics myself and doing the vocals and that sort of thing, so I think there’s a lot tying it together but I think the big difference between them is the support I had from Haxx who’s doing the production, it just makes everything a lot more polished in terms of the production. The other stuff I was putting out was definitely a lot more DIY and I really enjoyed being able to kinda take my vision to where I’d have liked it to go!

You managed to combine a really great commercial sound with that heavy dark bass which I guess drives the song into the club-based dance type of genre, so was that intentional or was it something that came out of the collaboration with Haxx?

Yeah it definitely, you’ve got elements of music that he does and fortunately for me I happen to love all the music that he works on. I really love that ability that he’s got to make sure that it’s got the elements you need to ensure that dance feel to it, but also the genre bending stuff that he’s able to do, which makes things more interesting than having a 120bmp dance song and being able to switch it up and do things differently. That really suits the music that I like to make, and you can hear it coming through. I’d been looking for someone to be my other half in the music sense, and it really feels like working with him I’ve been able to find that.

You mentioned that you’ve got some new songs up your sleeve. Can we expect any more in the coming months or you working on an EP?

At this stage I’ve still working out if they’re gonna be individual releases or an EP, so I can’t give too much away on that front! But I definitely have a couple of songs already ready to go. Early next year there’ll be plenty of music to dive into.

So I have one last question, You Should Hear is all about sharing music that deserves to be heard, so what’s one song you think everyone should hear, that doesn’t necessarily get the recognition it deserves?

That’s a great question. I’d love to say Over and Out by Sparrows which is currently killing it all over the place so unfortunately I don’t think I can say that because it’s definitely getting the recognition it deserves. There’s actually an old song from when I play in band days by a band called Young Lovers, called Talking In French. That song was the soundtrack for a lot of summers for me and I don’t think I saw it pop up anywhere outside of my playlist but I think it definitely deserves it!

Can YouTuber’s Become Musicians? I Mean, Yeah…

Hello friends.

This post is proudly brought to you by a comment left by the lovely Mia (high-key make sure you check out my girls blog, she’s all I inspire to when I grow up despite the fact that I’m older), who made me aware of a song released by the YouTube, SimplyNessa15.

My friends. It’s a whole, entire bop.

I was super duper skeptical when Mia suggested the song to me. I wasn’t sure, because for as long as I can remember, there hasn’t been a song released by a YouTuber that I genuinely liked. They’ve all been really overdone, overly mixed and auto-tuned and most of the time, it’s easy to figure out that they’ve only really released a song in the first place, because they have the following to ensure it’s somewhat successful with their fan base.

That said, I don’t watch Vanessa’s YouTube videos. Sure, I know who she is, and sometimes her video pops up on my ‘recommended’ bar, but I don’t think I’ve ever watched a video of hers in my life.

Meditate, is a great song. What I would commonly describe as an absolute tune.

If you’re into RnB and hip hop, and honestly, incredibly smooth female vocals, check out this song. Since listening to it after Mia’s recommendation, I’ve added it to at least three of my playlists, and showed quite a few friends.

Oh, and the break down 2 minutes in?? Insanity.

It’s become a bit of a favourite effect of mine, layering pitch shifted vocals to create a really deep, heavy second lead beneath the original, I’ve tried it a couple of times and it always adds the extra ‘oomf’ to a song, regardless of whether it’s just one line or the whole song.

Vanessa pulls it off perfectly, and hearing that break down towards the end of the song made my jaw drop and ensued the obsession with the song.

That too, the music doesn’t suffer in order to make her sound good. In my experience with YouTuber’s releasing their own music regardless of the fact that they aren’t singers in the slightest, it always comes off a tiny bit cheesy, because the music has to be sacrificed a bit in order for the vocals to sound good. It’s so harsh, and I feel a tiny (tiny) bit mean saying it, but it’s what I’ve come to expect.

The era of Troye Sivan releasing bomb as hell music while simultaneously keeping his YouTube channel alive has obviously come to a steady downhill close, but I am all for Vanessa to take that spot as of now.

Definitely give Meditate a listen. I’m so glad I did.

I discovered her through one of my favourite singers/people, through whom all is good in the world, Billie Eilish, who came across the New Zealand singer’s account and promptly became obsessed with Paige, which subsequently turned to her spamming her Instagram account story with videos of Paige’s numerous covers and original songs she has posted on her Instagram account, which is linked above.

As soon as I saw the first video, or more so, heard her voice, I jumped right over onto Paige’s account, and began my investigations. I was not disappointed.

Tell me this doesn’t give you chills.

We all know how much I love Done For Me by Kehlani and Charlie Puth, but I didn’t think I could ever love a cover version, an incredibly original cover version, this much. It’s perfect.

So since Billie Eilish bestowed her gift upon the world and my Instagram account, I’ve been eagerly awaiting new covers and videos from Paige, whether that be on her Instagram, or her YouTube channel, which is equally as generous.

Which made the news of her single release, So Far, all the more exciting, considering all the newly gained, and greatly deserved fans she has welcomed to the family following Billie’s promotion.

So Far came out a couple days ago, and let me tell you. If you’re a fan of Billie Eilish, Kehlani, any good music, you have to listen to it.

I’ve been listening to it on repeat this entire morning, especially while I write this, and it’s yet to get old.

Paige’s voice is probably one of the smoothest voice I’ve ever heard on social media. We all know how much I love to Alice Kristiansen (@alicelk) and I’m 100% that Paige is on the same level, I definitely put those two on the same shelf.

So Far reminds me a lot of two of Kehlani’s acoustic releases, Honey and Again, both of which are beautiful songs. Speaking of, there’s also this cover up on her Instagram to really drive my point home…

 

Paige’s voice is so smooth and mellow, but you can hear how clear and strong it is at the same time. I won’t talk about the guitar because you should just feel my love for it it in your own heart the second you hear that tone. The harmonies at the end nearly made me fling my laptop across the room when I heard them, this girl has me falling in love with no-one to fall in love with.

Definitely check Paige out. She truly tugs on the heart strings, and I don’t have a heart to tug on, so you know she’s doing something right.
